Climbing Mount Kinabalu

There are pools of information all over the internet about climbing Mount Kinabalu and it can be frustrating to read all of them. We have gathered some of the most frequent asked questions and answers below.

1. How to book?

You may choose to book directly with Sutera Sanctuary Lodge Sdn. Bhd. or travel company.

2. How much do I pay?

For a standard 2D1N climb, the price varies from averagely RM1300-RM1500 per person at low season; and averagely RM1500-RM1800 per person at high season. The low and high season varies from year to year.

3. What am I paying for?

Be sure to ask about what is inclusive for the price that you are paying for. You will need land transfer services, meals, accomodation, permit, insurance, and mountain guide. Don't get too excited when the price is much lower than explained above, it is very likely that some services (but must have) have been excluded.

4. Can I do one day climb?

One day climb permit has been suspended since 2015. 

5. Should I book in advance?

If you have a well-planned itinerary with confirmed fly-in and fly-out tickets, it is advisable to book the mountain climb in advance to avoid disappointment. 

6. Can I book last minute?

It is still possible to book the climb last minute. Some travellers cancel their mountain climb booking due to change of travel plan, and the slots will be made available to others that enquire.

7. What is the itinerary?

Itinerary, Day 1:

0615 Pick up 

0900 ETA Kinabalu Park for registration

1000 ETA Timpohon Gate  1866m

1500 ETA Base Camp 3272m

1700 Buffet dinner

2000 Rest or sleep


Itinerary, Day 2:

0200 Start trekking to the summit

0600 ETA at Low’s Peak, 4095m

0700 Descend from Low’s Peak

1000 ETA base camp, breakfast

1300 ETA at starting point, buffet lunch

1400 ETD to Kota Kinabalu

1600 ETA Kota Kinabalu

8. What gear do I need?

Head torch (compulsory), waterproof bag, raincoat, trekking or running shoe with good grip, warm clothes & pants, gloves and winter hat, refillable water bottle (min 1 Litre), high energy food such as chocolates, nuts, biscuits, or energy bars.
