There are more than 10 local markets in Kota Kinabalu. Here is a list of some of the best ones (in no particular order)
1. Central Market
This is a must-go if you're crazy for tropical fruits like banana, pineapple, avocado (seasonal) and papaya. You will find them and a variety of local grown spices and vegetables on the ground floor. And decent Muslim food stalls on the first floor. Steamed rice with any 4 side dishes at RM4. This is one of our favorite lunch spots. Opens daily from 6am to 6pm.
2. Gaya Sunday Market
On Sundays, the buzzling street of Gaya transforms into a lively market place. You’ll find almost anything here. A great place to shop for souvenirs as well. Opens from 6am to 1pm on Sunday only.
3. Seafood night market
This place is quiet on the day but comes alive when the fisherman’s boats return from the sea by sunset. A must-go dinner place if you’re a big fan of seafood. Opens daily from 6pm till late.
4. Segama night fruit market
This is where we jam especially during durian and mangosteen seasons. You can buy and have them right away by the street. Opens daily from 6pm till late.
5. Handicraft market
A prime spot for handicrafts such as wood works, jewelry, pearl, seashell crafts and textiles. A place where your bargaining skill will be put to test. Opens daily from 10am till late.
6. Filipino night market
Located next to handicraft market and is lit every evening until midnight. You can find BBQ seafood, street food, buffet Muslim hawker stalls, fresh vegetables and fruits and many more. Opens daily from 6pm till late.
7. Waterfront Kota Kinabalu
A good selection of bars and bistro can be found here. It’s where visitors and locals chill after sunset till late. Opens daily from 6pm till late.
8. Anjung Senja Night Food Market
Located just a short walk away, this market offers scrumptious Malay cuisine from stir fried to BBQ. Opens daily from 6pm till late.
9. Asquare Container Night Food Market
is a new attraction in town. You can find authentic Sabah’s ethnic cuisine, signature laksa, noodles, cheese burgers, coffees, bubble teas and many more. Opens daily from 5pm to 11pm.
10. Jesselton Artisan Market
is a pop up street art market. The market is a curated showcase of Kota Kinabalu's skilled artisans and their creations; be it paintings, pottery, fashion, jewelry, carpentry, bakery and many more. Specific dates only.
